A design thesis

How ?

There are several formats for theses:

Company-based thesis (CIFRE):

In this format, the doctoral student is funded by a company that validates their research topic and co-supervises the thesis. This format is particularly interesting for the access it provides to potential fieldwork opportunities.

Doctoral contract thesis:

In this format, the doctoral student is funded by the university itself.

These different formats of theses offer unique opportunities for students to engage in research and pursue their interests in design. Whether it’s through collaboration with industry partners or university funding, these thesis formats provide valuable resources and support for students as they embark on their research journeys.

The design research group can accommodate students in a « pre-doc » format, which involves involving the student in the life of the laboratory to better understand the research environment and confirm their choice to pursue a thesis.

    Doctoral school

The Doctoral School No. 405 « Economics, Management, Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science » is a multidisciplinary school that welcomes students within five laboratories. Four of these laboratories are joint research units (UMR) of the CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research) and the university: AGM  (mathematics), THEMA (economics and management), LPTM (theoretical physics), and ETIS (computer science, also a shared laboratory with ENSEA). The fifth laboratory is the research center of ESSEC (economics and management).

The design research group is part of the ETIS laboratory.

Writing a thesis in design serves several purposes and offers various benefits:

    1. In-depth exploration: A thesis allows students to delve deeply into a specific topic of interest within the field of design. It provides an opportunity to thoroughly research, analyze, and understand a particular aspect or problem related to design.

    2. Academic rigor: Writing a thesis in design demonstrates a student’s ability to engage in scholarly research and critical thinking. It involves conducting a literature review, formulating research questions, collecting and analyzing data, and drawing meaningful conclusions. This process helps develop analytical and academic skills.

    3. Contributing to knowledge: Through their research, students have the opportunity to contribute new insights, perspectives, or solutions to design-related issues. A thesis can add to the existing body of knowledge in the field and provide valuable contributions to the design community.

    4. Career advancement: Having a thesis in design can enhance career prospects, especially in research-oriented positions or when pursuing further education at the graduate level. It showcases a student’s expertise, research abilities, and dedication to the field, making them stand out to potential employers or academic institutions.

    5. Personal growth: Writing a thesis is a challenging and rewarding process that fosters personal growth and self-discipline. It requires time management, organization, and perseverance, helping students develop valuable skills that can be applied in various aspects of their professional and personal lives.

Overall, writing a thesis in design offers students a chance to deepen their knowledge, contribute to the field, and enhance their prospects for future career opportunities.
